[»] Great, great, great...
by vux - Jun 25th 2006 11:50:38

Great program, this is.

Except the little part when i type scandinavian ä / ö / å in msn, centericq adds one extra space between the cursor and the place where cursor really is. It goes like this ( big C - letter means "the blinking part which represents cursor", _ is space ):
abcdC
abcdä_C
abcdäö__C
abcdäöå___C

new line resets the cursors place. A little bug, but annoying. I'm using centericq-utf8, codepage conversion settings: remote UTF-8, local UTF-8, version 4.21.0-2ubuntu1.1, gnome/xcfe4, ubuntu.

though i really should give a look for the source, hmz...

[»] Don't use this, if you want PGP!
by Daniel Link - Aug 12th 2005 06:27:43

Centericq's PGP implementation is buggy. It violates the Jabber standard. A detailed bug report can be found on the net. I want to report this for a long time, but the centericq mailing list doesn't send me a conformation mail after subscription :( In other respects a great program, although resizing/redrawing is buggy. Try with ratpoison/screen.

I was looking for a console msn client and came across this project. I am very impressed with it. I find the UI to be very to my way of use/thinking. Currently just using it for MSN and LJ. Thank you for a great piece of software.

Hi, just installed. This looks great for sshing! I yummed icqcentral, loaded up, put in account details and as my contact list appeared, I got a segmentation error. Any tips to avoid this? got the RPM on freshly installed fedora core 4.

[»] swedish characters in contactlist and chatwindow
by vague - Jan 8th 2005 13:50:09

Hi,

first I have to agree with the previous posts that this is a fantastic project, thank you! :)

now to my problem:
when typing a message on icq or msn, i can see the swedish chars, but in the chat/sent window they appear
as spaces, the same with the contacts list... also, the recieving part can see the correct chars
i dont have problems in any other consoleapps so i doubt it has anything to do with my languagesettings...
i run centericq 4.9.12 with no codepage translations(ive tried several combinations and nothing works, they even make matters worse), on a gentoo installation with blackbox
merely a cosmetic problem since its only an annoyance to me, but still :)

I maintain SuSE RPMs for the latest version of CenterICQ.
You'll find them here on my SuSE RPM website: http://guru.unixtech.be/rpm/packages/Network/centericq/

Note that there's also an APT repository (for RPM) as well as an RSS feed

Keep up the good work :-)

by Naveen Nathan - Jun 5th 2004 03:10:38

I'm an OSX user and I've messed with only one multi IM client
so far and it happened to be

What I dislike (and this is not centericq related really since it
can be fixed) - the default key bindings and the powerbook
keyboard. All the function keys seem to be in use, some of the
commands (alt-h) are binded to other things in terminal app,
and is plain annoying. I have only used this for 5 mins though,
so I will spend some time tomorrow cleaning up my
preferences.

It's very easy to get started with, and luckily can be advanced/
modified to suit my needs. Truly an excellent piece of work.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

by Moshe Zadka - Mar 28th 2003 02:28:38

I'm using centericq 4.9.2 straight from Debian unstable, and it works amazingly. I'm using AIM, ICQ, Yahoo! and MSN without caring besides CenterICQ color coding stuff for me. I can set my away/online status at once for all of them. It works out of the box, easy to use and has yet to crash on me. It can reconnect when there are problems, which used to be a problem in older versions.

It's not gonna show up on your screen, silly...
It's just a see-through terminal window in Gnome. You just see his desktop background image, the actual app doesn't have any backgrounds.

I just had to install the libsigc++-1.0 (one I got from rpmfind.net for my RedHat i386 archi, the one for RedHat 7.2 works for 8.0 as well) and the centericq rpm detected the above installed libsigc++. Kewl, this thing looks good. Works fine now. I am able to connect to all the four messengers (ICQ, MSN, yAHoO, AOL) through this. Kudos Konst'!

The problem wasn't that hard to fix and only existed for a few days on a release that was soon updated. Admittedly it's not what you want to see when first installing a program, but considering how good an application centericq is then Konst is certainly forgiven :P

I would like a GUI to what is inarguably the best multi instant messaging library around. But the code is so good that it is easy to add your own interface to the existing code. Which I may very well start doing...

    Try it now.

Your program runs well, but the visible list doesn't seem to work for me, that is when I am logged on as invisible, I remain invisible even to people on the visible list. Is this a problem with the ever-changing ICQ2000 protocol? I am using CICQ 4.6.9.

The passwords are transmitted almost in a raw text for all the supported IM protocols, so it's easy to sniff them even if they're stored encrypted. Also, if someone has access to the config file, he also can access an encryption key and other stuff easily. So specially for those who don't like the fact the passwords are stored in the config file, it's possible to turn off "remembering" of passwords.

[»] Segfault on fast input when not in message mode
by Andrew Davis - Aug 16th 2002 09:28:37

I'm still using 4.7.8 until my admin installs 4.8.0, but I didn't see any mention of this bug in the changelog, so I figured I'd post it: when CenterICQ is not in message mode, pasting a 25-character or longer string into CenterICQ will cause a segmentation fault (any characters beyond the 25th will just appear on the prompt after CenterICQ segfaults).

I found this out by accident, of course; I can't think of any reason one would want to paste a string into CenterICQ when not typing any kind of message. Still, it'd be nice to see it fixed, so that CenterICQ doesn't crash whenever I accidentally right-click in my SSH window. ;)

Thank you for the report. However, it's not about pasing and 25-symbols length at all. Just a hint: try to remove the "r" symbols from a string you paste, or move a cursor somewhere to a contact list item which is not a group header. This bug is actually segfault on an attempt to rename a group header. Though, if I'm wrong I'm waiting a gdb output on the core dump from you.

[»] MSN NickName Change?
by Mistercam - Aug 13th 2002 20:43:46

I've looked through the different menus in CenterICQ (4.8.0), and I can't find a way to change my visible MSN nick name. My nick name is currently set to what it was when I last used MSN Messenger with that other OS that begins with "W" and ends with 2000 (before I made the switch to Linux.)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Probably the dumbest comment even on this board here. But when I run v4.7.8 and insert both my icq and msn accounts everything works fine.

Atleast it looks fine, I can send out messages, however how can I receive messages? I see names on my contactlist move to the top turning yellow probably meaning I received a message, but no message to be shown anywhere.

[»] Small interface bug
by Andrew Davis - Jul 26th 2002 12:04:50

Wonderful program!

As the subject implies, though, I've encountered a small interface bug -- nothing high-priority, but still worth mentioning, I think. It has to do with word-wrapping and text insertion when writing messages; if I write a multi-line message, then go back to the middle of a line to insert more text (if I forgot a few words, or what have you), the rest of the line to the right of the insertion point will be correctly advanced for each character typed. However, whenever the text is advanced far enough to require a word to be wrapped to the next line, it isn't actually inserted at the beginning of the next line -- it is placed on a completely new line.

That's probably not very clear, so I'll try to make an example. Say I type a line in a message such as:

one two three four

And then after the word "one" I insert more text, causing "two three four" to need to be wrapped to the next line, it will essentially progress as follows:

one (some new text) two three
four

one (more new text) two
three
four

one (still more new text)
two
three
four

If I have time, I'll take a look through the code and see if I can figure out a way to fix that, but I probably won't be successful as my development experience in C is quite limited. By intuition, though, I'd guess that the problem could be fixed by removing each word to be wrapped from the text and re-inserting it at the beginning of the next line (with any more wraps thus being propagated forward to the end of the message). An easier way would of course be just to change the position of the newline character, but that might require more work to make sure that all subsequent lines are properly wrapped.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling. At least until I'm vaguely familiar with how your code is structured. ;)

I may have posted too soon -- I just noticed that my shell account is running version 4.7.5, not 4.7.8. I'll ask the machine's admin to install 4.7.8 and see if the problem still exists.

      [»] Re: Small interface bug

4.7.8 does indeed have the same problem; it's purely cosmetic -- i.e. it doesn't affect the formatting of the sent message -- which makes sense since the text is only being wrapped for display.

My platform is FreeBSD 4.2 stable. Using centericq 4.0.0, message recipients would not receive the messages being sent. After updating to version 4.6.0, I get a segmentation fault, when entering the ICQ server address, user name and password. The client will not even start. Does someone know the solution? I would be much glad.

Very fine programm indeed :)
But, whenever I try to add contacts thru the menu (F4, Find/add contacts) the prog crashes on me.

When someone messages me (thru ICQ at least) I _can_ add them and if I make a subdir in ~/.centericq/ it also works.

Any clue?

[»] Looks great but...
by Owen Lloyd - Sep 17th 2001 18:41:19

There are just too many compile time problems for me to perservere with trying to get it working. Perhaps a requirements list? It looks for several things that I haven't got - and my Linux box has compiled most things in it's time, so it's unusual for things of this nature to be missing, and I'm no stranger to fisting the Makefile, and installing 10 other things to get something to compile on my box. All I can think of is that the author's dev system is radically different from my Slackware based one - which has compiled eveything from Linux to Apache, MySQL, NetHack, Squid, Sendmail, KDE, Xfree86 etc etc, and has recent Gnu make, gcc, autoconf, m4 and so on.

No one else has reported any compile problems, so I assume it's just my slightly old system (2.0.34 kernel, libc5) I plan to install a RedHat 7.1 system on my network soon as well - hopefully CenterICQ will compile on that - as it looks to be the best text mode client around (hehe and all this just to find a use for an old Toshiba 3200 which I just blessed with an old ne2000 and the NCSA DOS telnet facility - its a 286 so it has to run DOS - but only to fireup the telnet client :)

Hello. I am glad to get your feedback here, and of course, there can be some compilation problems under such an old system. But if they're exist, we can fix them easily. Just send me the output of your make and we'll work it out.

      >

Well I know it;s not up to date, but I would have thought a relatively simple ncurses app would compile with out issue - as it quite happily compiles the latest Apache, MySQL, mod-php, php4 etc - all of which are sizeable projects.

I apologise for not getting back to you sooner - I just checked the project page as I was reading your article about ickle. You domain appears to be offlne right now, and I won't post huge chunks of output here - but I'll leave you the last few lines. There are pages of basically cast warnings an example of which is:-

      centericq.cc: In method `void centericq::checkmail()':
      centericq.cc:561: warning: passing `char *' to argument 1 of `__builtin_constant
      _p(int)' lacks a cast

      And eventually we get:-

      make[2]: *** [centericq.o] Error 1
      make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/centericq-3.35.22/src'
      make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
      make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/centericq-3.35.22'
      make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2
      annicnova:/usr/src/centericq-3.35.22#

It compiles the contents of intl/ ok before this happens (the errors are from the 'src' directory).

Thanks very much for reading that - you gotta love the open source movement :) Strangely, Larry Ellison *still* hasn't got back to me as to why his project - Oracle 9i won't install properly on my vanilla RH7.2 box.. :P

Try using more compilcated passwords. Recently ICQ server doesn't allow to use too simple ones, and doesn't report that. And we still dunno how it judges if a password is simple or ok.

[»] Certainly the most friendly console-client
by Tassilo v. Parseval - Jul 1st 2001 03:22:04

I think we really should acknowledge that centericq is a great piece of software and a bright example for a truely ergonimic console program. As for me, centericq has definitely replaced micq.
Yet, centericq has its weirdnesses (perhaps no longer in 3.34.15) from time to time, like sending messages over and over again to certain people, not updating the list of people online etc.
However, everyone should try this first before considering micq.

[»] Very good for shell account systems
by Lunaryn - Nov 28th 2000 13:33:43

I use a shell account for almost everything I do, since I move from computer to computer quite a bit in my current situation. Were it not for this program I don't think I would use ICQ at all. CenterICQ is a very useful program which I can access from anywhere due to the text-based interface.

I do seem to have to play around with the source a bit to compile it; the shell system in question is using Slackware, I'm not sure what libc, and I always seem to be missing a few typedefs and/or #defines for socket- related code... Anyone else encounter this?
